System requirements for FUSE compliance

New safety requirements regularly equate to more input and additional expenditure on testing in vehicle development. When FUSE specifications are added to the mix, it can be complicated to comply with systems engineering specifications in the process as a whole. Our master’s degree candidate Timo Thierfelder brought together the threads in his master’s thesis, however, showing how FUSE and requirements management go hand in hand with regard to NCAP targets.

Timo studied the system requirements arising from Euro NCAP test protocols and developed a set of process specifications for systems engineering with a view to ensuring compliance with the requirements. “I started by analysing the structure and content of the NCAP test protocols and looked into various possible ways of working out system requirements from the test cases they contain,” explained Timo. “I then checked that my solutions were compliant with the A-SPICE guidelines and selected the most suitable one.”

Our Full-Width Frontal Crash & Side Impact Protection team applied the process specifications to the “Far Side Test and Assessment Protocol” as an example. Additional requirements have been in effect for this test protocol since 2024. “The results can now be used by the FUSE teams at PSW and will help to improve systems engineering processes in line with requirements management,” added Timo, clearly happy with the outcome. Another possible area of ​​application would be legal burden cases.

Although Timo found the NCAP protocol structure very complex, he was able to complete his thesis at PSW thanks to his colleagues, two of whom he singled out for their support. “My supervisor Torsten Treufeld and my team leader Nijaz Dizdarevic were always willing to listen to my questions and help me with their expertise,” said Timo. Since graduating, he has stayed in the automotive industry and now works in quality management.
